Punctuation Rule: Apostrophe shows Possession

What is an Apostrophe? 
Apostrophe has several uses. It is commonly used to indicate that something belongs to someone.

How do we use an apostrophe indicating possession?

  • ('s) is used on a noun to show that it is the owner of an object
    • Mr. Ramesh's hat
    • Sam's bag
    • my brother's room
  • (') only apostrophe is used on plural nouns since the letter s is already present
    • the girls' skirts
    • my students' work
  • ('s) is used if the plural word does not have an s
    • children's book
